![]() ![]() Mudjacking uses a process of drilling one or two-inch holes into the concrete and injecting concrete mix underneath to lift the slab and level it. Therefore, a 10′ x 10′ slab or 100 per square foot slab will cost $120 for materials and $470 for labor, or a total of $590. Depending on how much work is involved, the contractor will usually charge a flat rate for labor typically two or three times what the materials cost. Self-leveling uses a polymer compound that costs about $1.20 per square foot, on average. However, this process will not affect the footing around load-bearing walls, so if those are sagging, the settlement will continue unless the walls are lifted and reinforced. New concrete gets poured over the surface, it will fill in the areas of depression and cracking and when finished, looks the same as a new slab. ![]() This option is the cheapest method of leveling a concrete slab. This option gets used primarily for small sections of slab that have cracks or a small amount of sagging. Many homeowners are even getting creative with concrete slabs by using epoxy and other finishing products to make their slab look impressive without going to the expense of floor covering.ĭepending on your budget and what the leveled slab will get used for, leveling is an equally good option and cheaper than new. Granted, you might need to fill the cracks, sand, and polish the leveled slab, but you would have to do some finishing for a new slab anyway. Concrete leveling is less expensive, more convenient, and could give you a finished product in less than half time that is almost as good. The price of hauling away the old slab could cost as much leveling it. What you must ask yourself here is, does it make more sense to spend twice as much or more to demolish the old slab, haul it away, reform, and repour the concrete?Ī new slab might be a good option, but consider the cost of repair will likely be significantly less. ![]()

Comparable exercises seeking verité through the use of veterans to re-enact their war roles come to mind. ![]() That is how the film was marketed, but against this stands the argument that combat does not lend itself to literal reproduction of individual or collective experience: why should using veterans to re-enact actual fighting necessarily make a film look more realistic? After all, there are good reasons why people have to be taught how to act. More problematically, they argue that the central role played by Arnhem veterans in Theirs is the Glory lends the film a particular authenticity. The authors argue that, like the American war veteran and director Sam Fuller (1912-1997), celebrated for his brutal portrayal of violence on screen, Hurst’s visceral experience of combat and loss resulted in an unusual degree of realism to his explorations of armed conflict. That surely is an argument for another day, although in strategic conception as a dramatic blow behind enemy lines designed to shorten the war, and in its calamitous failure, the Dardanelles campaign and Operation Market Garden could certainly be examined side by side, even had Hurst not fought in one and directed a film which recreated aspects of the other. It seems a bit odd, just because Hurst fought there, to devote a whole chapter to the theme of “Gallipoli airbrushed from history – The 6 th Royal Irish Rifles”. In addition, chapters are devoted to discussion of the experiences of individual soldiers who fought at Arnhem and then re-enacted their roles in Theirs is the Glory to their weaponry and that of their German opponents and, somewhat confusingly, to the Allied attempt to seize the Dardanelles in 1915 through the landings at Gallipoli. These include the Irish War of Independence-themed Ourselves Alone (1936) The Lion Has Wings of 1939 which extolled British air power Miss Grant Goes to the Door (1940), an interesting Ministry of Information short film made to raise public awareness of the danger of German parachutists and The Malta Story (1953), which is primarily about aerial warfare of which Hurst had no direct knowledge. The book also provides a summary discussion of other films directed by Hurst which portray armed conflict. ![]() The authors concentrate on Hurst’s 1946 film Theirs is the Glory, in which British veterans of Operation Market Garden, the ill-conceived attempt by airborne forces to seize key river and canal crossings in the Netherlands in September 1944 which if successful was predicted to bring victory against Germany by Christmas, returned to their Arnhem battleground to re-enact their bruising experience of combat, defeat, and escape or capture. During and after the Second World War he worked mainly in Britain, converting to Roman Catholicism in 1947, and producing both privately-commissioned dramas and public information films. Openly gay, he found 1930s Hollywood, where his great mentor was the Irish-American director John Ford, rather more congenial than provincial Belfast. Raised in loyalist East Belfast, Hurst was proud equally of Ulster and of Ireland: he famously said that “I would fight for England against anybody except Ireland … an Englishman is worth twenty foreigners … an Irishman is worth fifty Englishmen”. Sir Roger Moore, veteran of seven James Bond movies, contributes a foreword in which he paints an affectionate portrait of Hurst, who financed his studies at RADA. The authors are David Truesdale, a prolific and respected writer whose works focus on the experiences of ordinary soldiers rather than of the generals and grand strategists who often decided their fate and Allan Esler Smith, Hurst’s grand-nephew and administrator of his estate. Bored with his lot, he deserted in 1917, joining the Royal Army Service Corps, and was again wounded on the Western Front. Hurst, a Belfast man wounded at Gallipoli in 1915, was afterwards deemed unfit for front-line service and was assigned to a labour battalion. It discusses conflict-themed films directed by Brian Desmond Hurst (1895-1986). It will be of interest alike to battlefield buffs and to students of film, although both may find some fault with the treatment and with the book’s structure, approach, and remarkable weight (1.2 kilos for 355 A5 pages). That Theirs is the Glory spans two distinct genres, military history and film, is perhaps appropriate for a book in which the bridge at Arnhem holds centre stage. ![]() ![]() Each adventure comes with a description of rewards for winning it, penalties for losing it, and potential rewards. It was greeted with a positive reception from critics and topped the US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart as well as peaking in the top-twenty of the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Rowland's second most successful single as a lead artist in the United States. Love wrote half of the songs on the album, while Rowland co-wrote three songs on the album.Īfter re-recording the majority of the album, a new single featuring Lil Wayne titled " Motivation", preceded the album in the United States. Here I Am also features guest performances from Lil Wayne, Nelly, Rico Love, Lil Playy, The WAV.s and Big Sean. The international version of the album features seventeen songs including ones excluded from the US editions and some remixes. Three other singles: " Forever and a Day", " Rose Colored Glasses" and " Grown Woman", all had limited commercial success and are subsequently included on selected editions of the album or excluded altogether. " Commander" (2010) produced by and featuring David Guetta topped the US Hot Dance Club Songs chart and became a top-ten hit in the United Kingdom and some other European territories. Originally scheduled for release in 2010, the album was pushed back after the first round of singles were released to mixed critical and commercial reception. It follows Rowland's assertion that "no one puts her in a box" with common themes around womanhood, sexual intimacy and love. Here I Am is predominately a pop, R&B and dance album. The album is Rowland's first release since parting ways with her manager Mathew Knowles and longtime Sony Music record label Columbia Records (through Knowles' Music World Entertainment). I’ll conclude by saying that the designers of the JLB onstage IV really focused on their product’s form, but this meant that basic functions expected of the product fell short of expectations. Here I Am is the third studio album by American singer Kelly Rowland, released through Universal Motown and Universal Music Group on July 22, 2011. And the final flaw in the JLB onstage IV’s form is that to enable the device to become portable you must use four AA batteries, that doesn’t seem like a problem, but then the battery cover doesn’t not securely fasten and can easily fall off exposing the batteries which then become prone to falling out. This can cause internal damage to the iPhone with it rocking back and forth while still being plugged into the dock. When you have lost the remote the only way to control is to use the iPhone itself, which sits precariously on the top of the onstage unsupported. The problem of this is the size, it is only 20mmx50mmx3mm and can easily get lost. Also with the device up against the wall the only button (the one and off button) is now no longer inaccessible as it is situated on the back of the system.Īnother flaw in the JLB onstage IV’s form is that you are expected to control the iPhone using a small remote control that enables you to toggle volume, navigate songs and pause. This caused a drop in the quality of the music, because I could now hear an echo where the sound is bouncing of the wall. Its impressive spiralling aesthetics meant that there are two speakers, one on the front and another on the back, in the corner I had the iPhone (which was docked) facing me therefore one of the speakers is now facing the wall. But then I moved it into the corner of the room and its performance dropped. I rushed home and set up my miniature music system in the centre of the room and enjoyed how it filled the room with music. Last year, I was wondering around an enormous virgin megastore and then, the exciting, original and swirly design of the JLB onstage IV iPhone dock draw me into what seemed at the time to be a great purchase. ![]() ![]() ![]() The handshake must include the ClientKeyExchange handshake message.
